Roman Glazman was born an only child to his parents in Leningrad, Russia. His father passed away unexpectedly when he was only 5 or 6 years old. His mother went on to raise him alone. Roman always told stories about his mother who was a very wise, courageous woman. He had a happy, active childhood. His mother supported his dreams by encouraging him to read childhood adventure stories. He was inspired by each story with his adventurous spirit. When he was 15 or 16 years old, he told his mother he was going to join a geological expedition in the depths of Russia. During the expedition, the group built tents on the snow and survived amazing elements. He graduated from high school in Leningrad and went on to earn a B.S. and an M.S. in Oceanography, from the Leningrad Hydrometeorology Institute. His postgraduate work was completed at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, USSR.

In 1980, Roman accepted a position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Rhode Island. He came to the United States with his wife Irena and earned his Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography. In 1985, he landed a job as a Research Scientist with Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology. He studied many oceanographic questions such as Electromagnetism and Wave Turbulence.

He and his wife went on to have two beautiful daughters during their marriage. Roman shared his love of nature with his family. He loved windsurfing, skiing, kayaking, sailing, camping, hiking, and traveling. He loved to feel nature on his skin and he had a deep appreciation and love for the ocean. He was an avid reader enjoying classical literature, historical literature and modern literature. He also played the guitar and learned ballroom and swing dancing. He enjoyed classical songs and jazz along with the music of Louis Armstrong. Roman had an appreciation for art, taking time to go to the theatre and ballet. Roman Glazman was a true Renaissance Man. He will be remembered as a devoted father and a devoted friend. He had a deep perspective on family. His advice to others: It is important to use every talent you have, using the things you are blessed with to do what you're supposed to do in life. According to his request and his support of democracy around the world, donations are welcome to the Simon Wiesenthal Center at www.wiesenthal.com
